Varela: The Story Of David's Reject.

David Moyes was one of the most unsuccessful and shocking managerial appointments in Manchester United’s timeline after the retirement of Sir Alex in 2013. After 26 glorious years Sir Alex had recommended the appointment of David Moyes as his successor at the club. But who knew that the former Everton manager could not cope with the pressure of handling such a respectfed global club. We all knew the outcome! He was highly criticised for his unexpected and failed signings who most do not exist in the club anymore or are on the fringes of the squad. Few are already in the current manager Jose Mourinho’s good books. But few are expected to be sold this coming transfer window in a hope to remove the
deadwood brought in by former managers.
Let’s talk about one failed such failed player who didn't make the cut. Guillermo Varela

Varela was David's first official signing as Manchester United manager in 2013. After a successful two week trial in the clubs academy system, Varela was signed for 2.8 million euros from his boyhood club Penarnol on a five year contract aged 20.
After Moyes got sacked immediately at the end of the 2103/14 campaign there was new hope for Varela as new manager Louis Van Gaal sent the prospect out to Real Madrid's reserve team Real Madrid Castilla in the Spainish second division. Valera had gained quite some experience whilst at Madrid making 33 appearances and scoring 1 goal for the reserve side playing in his natural position as a right back.

The following season he was recalled to United by Van Gaal after a successful loan spell.
This was in the 2015/16 season where Varela then 22 was waiting for his first team opportunity when he finally got it in December during the period where most of the teams main defenders were out injured. Making his debut in a goalless draw at home to West Ham as a substitute. He later went on to make his starting debut against Wolfsburg in the Champions League playing the full match and an impressive one. The result ended up in an shocking exit from Champions League a 3 – 2 loss.
Then came the end of Van Gaal who got sacked due to failure to qualify for the Champions League. With the arrival of Mourinho,Varela was sent on loan again but this time to Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he was a regular starter for the club, and performed decently. Many supporters started to think ṭhaṭ his good performances would lead him with a chance next season but that hope diminished due to the rise of Valencia who now seems to be irreplaceable and fans called him the best right back in the league which he showed glimpses of numerous times this year.

Later on at the end of the season Varela was sent back to Manchester right before the German League Cup Final. His manager stated that he was going to start the match, which if he did could be the turning point of his career and future with the Red Devils. But he was sent back because of an inappropriate tattoo which was disrepesctful towards the club. Varela was going to have his loan extended due to his performances but due to his actions they terminated the loan and also cancelled his extension.

Varela now 24 and with only 11 first team appearances for United the future doesn't look bright for then one of the brightest talents in South American football has now been only a small unnoticed name in a big Manchester United squad. Not only that but tainted with the phrase of The Start Of David’s Big Mistakes. It looks very unlikely that Varela will now ever get a chance in the United first team with Valencia, Darmian, Fosu Mensah and few possible new defensive arrivals. It has been stated that Valera is now a liability to the club and will be sold in the summer transfer window. He has been linked with a move to Sunderland who have just been relegated to the second tier of English football, a club formerly managed by David Moyes.
As we known that competition in the current first team is so difficult that its become a war zone, play well or be on the bench. We have already seen such departures like Memphis Depay and Morgan Schnierderlin who eventually got sold as they failed to impress. To conclude, a player with 11 first team appearances and aged 24 not developed to his full potential will ever stand a chance against Valencia or any other United reserve. It will be wise if he is sold as soon as possible or it could destroy the players career. Only a team in the lower leagues of England or other Champions League minions will be suitable for him. He is valued at 2.8 million but the club will accept any decent offer in the similar price range.
