Manchester United’s transfer business has calmed down over
the past few weeks. Having signed Fred and Dalot, Mourinho is on course to have
a big transfer window ahead of him. He has instructed the club that he wants
the business to get done before the squad fly out to the United States for
their pre-season ahead of the commencement of the Premier League in August.
United have completed one more bit of business and is a rather controversial
one. Marouane Fellaini has extended his contract with the club for two more
years and with an option to extend for a further year, hence keeping himself at
the club until 2020.
Fellaini is currently at the World Cup with high flying
Belgium who have qualified for the round of 16. The midfielder’s contract was
to expire at the end of June which would have enabled him to sign for a new
club as a free agent. Mourinho was reluctant in keeping the player but the deal
was held up due to the two parties not finalising on few financial details
which now seem sorted.
Fellaini stated "I am pleased to be continuing my
journey as a Manchester United player. I made this decision because I am very
happy here. Also, I feel like this team, under Jose, still has a lot we want to
achieve. I would like to say a special thank you to Jose for the faith he has
always shown in me. My focus now is on the World Cup and I am looking forward
to a successful season ahead."
Jose has been a huge fan of the player and has supported and
protected him from his harshest critics and the media. Fellaini may not be a
fan favourite but has been a favourite of the manager for his loyalty,
intelligence and professionalism, which the manager has stated for quite some
time now. Mourinho happily stated, "I am very happy Marouane is staying
with us. I always believed in his desire to stay with the club and I am
delighted that he has signed a new contract."
Fellaini 30, has made 156 appearances for the club scoring
20 goals in the process. The news of Fellaini signing the deal hasn’t gone down
well with the supporters who are distort and were keen that the Belgian was
destined to leave the club and chase first team football somewhere else with host
of Turkish and Chinese clubs interested in his signature. It is no doubt that
Fellaini will get a starting spot next season for a number of reasons. He is 30
and is not good on the ball. His physical power is commendable but he is not technical
and fast for the Premier League. Although he is a central defensive midfielder,
he gives away too many fouls and is only good in the air which is not good enough
for a player in this day and age.
Mourinho expressed his desire to sign at least two
midfielder and has already accomplished with signing one which is Fred. United
signed the Brazilian for 52 million and is said to be a much-needed signing due
to the players great technical and attacking ability which the team lacked last
season. Carrick retired from football and joined Jose’s backroom staff. With most
thinking Fellaini would leave, there was an opening for one more midfielder
with it now being less likely. United are still in the race for Milinkovic-Savic
and Toni Kroos.
Fellaini will not be starting the matches with Mourinho
hoping to start Fred alongside Pogba and Matic but, he will definitely heat up
the competition even though his main role will be that of an impact player.
United will have Matic, Pogba, Fred, Herrera, McTominay and Lingard who has
discovered his ability to play as a number 8 for England. Andreas Pereira is also
hoping to return to his parent club after an impressive loan spell. Andreas
will be a crucial player for United should he get opportunities due to his
attacking capability and technical game play. McTominay had a great season with
United last year and will be looking to impress the boss and fight for the
starting role, after all, he is the Manager’s Player of The Year! Although Fellaini
will just be an impact player, he has drastically impacted the young
midfielders who are waiting on the wings to get a chance. A new signing is less
expected, we shouldn’t rule it completely out but it is looking less likely.
It would have been a wise move for both the parties if Fellaini
left the club in search for regular football which is confirmed that he will not
get at United for the next three years.
Fellaini is currently with Belgium in the World Cup and has
scored one goal in the competition so far. United’s pre-season starts on July
14. Belgium play their next game against Japan in the round of 16 on 2nd
July.
