Julian Draxler: One Last Try For Mourinho?

United Could Make A Last Minute Bid For Draxler

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho concluded in his press conference before the 4-0 victory over Swansea City that United will not be looking to complete one last signing, before the window officially shuts down at the end of this month. However, the manager mentioned that the club should calm their interest in acquiring the signing of a winger, even though the boss is happy to go ahead with one. United have still been linked with two last ditch attempts to sign Thomas Lemar and Julian Draxler from Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

Lemar however, would be very unlikely given his asking price over 55 million and the current condition of the ‘depleted’ Monaco team, having lost Mendy, Bakayoko, Silva to other clubs and the likes of Mbappe, Lemar, Fabinho planning a move away. Arsenal also have fancied Thomas for quite some time now, but given the situation it’s difficult for him to move away.

That leaves us with the option of Draxler. The German international joined PSG from Wolfsburg in the January transfer market last season, but is again linked with a move away after joining the club after just eight months in it. With the arrival of superstar Neymar, it is very difficult for Julian to find a place amongst the ranks of Paris with already Neymar, Ben Arfa, Di Maria and Lucas dominating the attack from the wings. Since his arrival, Draxler has just made 25 appearances, scoring 10 goals in all competitions. For some he is just an impact player, but given his age, potential and ability he is a gem of a player with rare capabilities of playing the game with two feet. Being a natural right footer, he has a rare ability to play with the left too, a quality that only few players possess.
Having failed in the pursuit of Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan due to a failure in settlement of a transfer fee, Mourinho can get player who has the similar abilities in Draxler. He can be the perfect Jose Mourinho player given his playing style and versatility. Draxler is known for is dynamism on the pitch, standing six feet tall he already has that quality that Jose loves, tall strong, overpowering attacking winger. The current United side already consists players like him in Pogba, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, Matic and Fellaini, all tall strong giants who dominate the game with their physicality, Julian’s addition could make United the complete balanced and strong team ready to win and ensure attacking fluidity and results.

United Have Missed Out On Ivan Perisic

Dangerous in counter attacking and always dominating in one on one situations, Draxler will help United finish those missed chances and increase the goal margin by instilling some more creativity in the front three. Mourinho loves competition for places in his side, already having seven players capable to play on the wings, with Draxler in the side Mata and Mkhitarayan could settle for the attacking midfielder role and Draxler could start on the left wing, dropping Martial to the bench and Rashford as a back- up striker for Lukaku. Born as an attacking midfielder during his days with Schalke and Wolfsburg days in the Bundesliga in Germany, it was said to be his best position, but upon his arrival at PSG he is transformed into a player who can play on either side of the wings and in deep midfield due to his strength, awareness and dual foot ability. This is one quality that Mourinho likes a versatile attacker.

At 23 Draxler has won some commendable awards. Having won the league with PSG and two domestic cups with Schalke and Wolfsburg respectively. His international cabinet is worth a watch, winning the World Cup in 2014 with Germany and captained the side towards a Confederations Cup in 2017 wining the golden ball on the way.

Young dynamic players like him are rare and at such a young age of 23 and given the addition of Neymar, his rumoured unsettlement could be taken as an advantage. In this highly inflated market Draxler for only 32 million is a steal and would be great if Ed Woodward could pull one more rabbit out of the hat in these final days of the summer transfer window and complete the quota of four signings wanted by Mourinho.
